Abstract

The process of forced migration is a traumatic experience for individuals who migrate. The objective of this article is to reflect on the process of integration of asylum seekers and holders of humanitarian visas in Brazil into national society, especially considering the temporary condition of both groups. The work is based on bibliographic review, analysis of legal instruments and actions of the State and civil society organizations. Brazil has advanced on issues related to legislation and hosting, but there are other factors that need to be considered in the integration process that are still not well resolved either by the State or by Brazilians. It is concluded that Brazil has made a breakthrough in migration legislation and policy but may go yet through a phase of retreat and that integration is a two-way street that depends on the efforts of the receiving society and the proper migrant.
