This paper reviews the representation of Rio de Janeiro's favelas in contemporary
audiovisual production. Twenty five recent films involving representations of favelas are used to present a field of study in need of more profound research and the selected films are shown to adopt distinct points of view. Images of favelas have gained increasing importance in cinema and video media, whether in documentary or fictional modes and self representative or external points of view.
