The main objective of this paper is to understand continuities and discontinuities
in urban representations concerning public space employed by the mayors of Bogotá and Rio de Janeiro. The focus is on the view that these agents held in the 1990s when public space was promoted as an important issue in local political agendas when public space came to occupy a central position in the definition of the problems and solutions for both cities. However, there are important differences in relation to ideas about urban order, which gives a local character to the specific representations used.
