Abstract

The territory of the Brazilian Nation-State historically was founded on the
economic slavery system and the socio-spatial exclusion of Africans and their descendants. In this process, racist ideology and social discrimination became dominant patterns determining access and rights to territory for economic, social, political and cultural production and reproduction. This study has the objective of analyzing the integration of Afro-Brazilians in the Nation-State, appropriation and expropriation of ethnic territories, geopolitical context, actions of the State and the role of historical territories of slave resistance and religious sanctuaries of Afro-Brazilian cults in this process. The research employed a qualitative approach to secondary sources based on the critical reading of the literature on Brazilian Nation-State formation, racism and prejudice in everyday life during the 19th and 20th Centuries and perspectives concerning collective rights of Afro-Brazilians today.
