Research developed in the city of Rio de Janeiro which sought to critically evaluate Chinese rural exodus to the suburbs of that city. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the reasons that motivated inhabitants of poor rural areas of China to immigrate to Brazil and take up residence and work in a city which is so different from their place of origin. The conclusions are based on the analysis of interviews of Chinese migrants who settled in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro with regard to why they left China, immigrant networks encountered in Brazil, their current line of work, income and standard of living as well as continuity of language and cultural habits.
