In 2012 the city of Rio de Janeiro was able to register parts of its territory as “cultural landscapes” on the UNESCO List of World Heritage after a decade of effort. During this period the city underwent profound social and economic urban transformation. This article analyzes the process of striving for the UNESCO World Heritage distinction by reflecting on how the historical evolution of the city's landscapes were attributed value and how this relates to the parallel process of urban transformation at the moment when Rio de Janeiro reached the mark of 450 years since its founding. By exploring the tension between heritage and projection in “making a city”, the study contributes to research on the city of Rio de Janeiro as well as to understanding the complex production of urban space in general.
