Abstract

The incorporation of the concept of gentrification in Latin America proved to be late, when compared to the Anglo-Saxon academic environment. In addition, its assimilation raises epistemological and political questions about the relevance of importing an analytical tool forged in the global North. In the last decade, however, interest in the subject has grown consistently, with a multiplication of case studies, comparative analyses, publications of thematic issues and books dedicated to gentrification in Latin American cities. This article seeks to trace the trajectory of the debate on gentrification on the continent and to identify points of convergence on the general characteristics and particular aspects of a gentrification which would be properly Latin American. Finally, some gaps and emerging issues that may enrich the research agenda on the subject are pointed out.
