The city of Aparecida, located in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo State, was born from a fortuitous circumstance: the recovery of an image of Our Lady of Conception in the Paraíba River. This study addresses processes of urbanization in what became the largest pilgrimage center in Brazil where territorial disputes arose between the Catholic Church and Municipal Government. Over time the initial dispute between the needs of faith and the needs of making a living has shifted to conflict involving contemporary necessities. The study is based on bibliographic research, the analysis of governmental and Catholic Church documents and field research and contributes to understanding contemporary cultural and spatial contradictions.Metrics
