An overview of urban space in Mozambique led to research on identifying factors which contribute to social inequality in urban land use in Mozambican cities. The present study treats the spatial dimensions of social inequality in the municipality of Mocuba, the second largest city of Zambezia Province. Urban land use in Mocuba is shown to be a product of local community praxis in its interaction with nature and historical experience as well as the strong influence of capital in which the hybrid space of Mocuba is constituted by the lower and upper circuits of the urban economy resulting in social inequalityexpressed at different scales.
