This work analyzes landscape dynamics and measures anthropic pressure on the environment in São Geraldo do Araguaia municipality, Pará state. Data from vegetation cover and land use mapping produced by the MapBiomas project (1988-2018) were used. Anthropic pressure was measured by applying the Anthropic Transformation Index (ITA) which analyzes the landscape in its entirety and in isolation and takes areas of environmental protection into consideration. Several changes in the natural landscape of the municipality were identified during the study period. ITA results showed that these changes generated pressure on the landscape and, consequently, threatened environmental conservation in the municipality. However, despite suffering anthropization, environmental protection areas were found to be of paramount importance for containing deforestation and attenuating pressure on the natural environment.
