Proposal for Recuperating Refuse Dumps in the Semi-Arid Zone of Brazil: Paulista Municipality, Paraíba State

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present a proposal of measures for closing and recuperating the city dump of Paulista, Paraíba. Documentary analysis was carried out, secondary databases were consulted, and, subsequently, field research was undertaken in order to identify the extent of the site and photographically document it. Then, bibliographic consultation identified methods for recuperating degraded areas, which were applicable to refuse dumps. The proposal for recuperation begins with removing waste and disposing it in an area prepared to receive this kind of material, followed by social work with the poor recyclers who lose work and an evaluation of soil and groundwater contamination present in the old site. Reforestation is recommended for recuperating the site as well as further monitoring.
