The present work analyzes how the idea of landscape has been used in urban management master plans for the cities of Recife and Rio de Janeiro. Both cities present significant socio-spatial transformations since the 1990s and applied landscape as a key concept in their master plans. A survey of the use of the word landscape and its variations in the Master Plans of these cities was undertaken and our analysis displayed a initial morphological sense used, which changed after 2000 when the landscape is no longer understood as a physiognomy but rather as an instrument for territorial management.
