Abstract

This article traces academic synergy between the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The UFRJ itself resulted from the fusion of two separate universities: the Federal District University (UDF) and the University of Brazil (UB). The IBGE also changed over time. The focus of the history of this relationship is on the role played by different academic leaders of the two institutions in different historical periods.
