history of the evolution of research in Coastal Geomorphology and its unfolding into Coastal and Marine Geography at the Laboratory of Marine Geography of the Department of Geography and Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro is presented. We begin with an analysis of the process of separation of the Departments of Geography and History at the former National Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Brazil. This occurred in the mid-20th century during a period university reform and associated professionalization of academic careers. As a result, the Department of Geography was transferred to the Institute of Geosciences and moved to the new campus constructed on the Ilha do Fundão. Research activities described include geomorphological characterization of Brazilian coastal zones, mainly in the State of Rio de Janeiro, studies of physical and socio-economic vulnerability as well as the surveys of marine areas and their integration with the coastal processes.
