Abstract

In this article, amidst a debate between sociologists and geographers, we propose a reflection on the interactionist perspective, a theoretical current that emphasizes
the interactive character of urban and public life. More specifically, it is about recognizing public spaces as essential places for meeting city diversity, that is, for the daily exercise of public sociability. In our empirical case study, based on several fieldworks in the three largest squares in the Tijuca neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro city, we propose a geography of public sociability
