Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze one of the less studied aspects of the professionalization process in national football: the sociogenesis of football managers. Based on oral history interviews and periodicals, especially Jornal dos Sports, this study argues that the division between managers and players became entrenched after professionalization and resulted from a strategy coordinated by FIFA and other federations, allowing executives to monopolize the symbolic profits associated with club and national team victories.
