CONSTRUCTION OF BELONGING AND REPRESENTATION OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF PORTO ALEGRE/RS

Abstract

The study seeks to understand the identity construction and cultural maintenance in the Jewish community of Porto Alegre/RS, Brazil, through participation in the World Maccabiah Games, from 1969 to 2022. The method used was Oral History, with interviews with Maccabiah athletes, as well as information from newspaper reports, with the sources being analyzed from the perspective of Cultural History, mediated by a bias of Sports Sociology. In Brazil, the Maccabiah Games have been taking place since 1953, participation in this event provided representations for the cultural preservation and strengthening of the Jewish community of Porto Alegre, not only at the local and regional level, but also on the national scene.
