Abstract

This study aims to investigate the institutional organization of the Club Ciclista Barriga Verde, with particular attention to its various spheres of activity. It seeks to understand how the competitions and sporting events promoted by the club, its participation in prestigious social occasions, as well as the discourses surrounding bodily practices associated with the use of the bicycle, contributed to shaping an urban culture guided by values of civility and aspirations for progress—features characteristic of local elites at the dawn of the twentieth century. This research is based on documentary analysis. For its development, editions of periodicals circulating in Florianópolis during the period under study were consulted, available through the Digital Newspaper Archive of the Brazilian National Library.
