THE CIRCUS IN PETRÓPOLIS AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY
DYNAMICS AND CIRCULATION
Abstract
This article analyzes the presence and circulation of circus companies in Petrópolis in the late nineteenth century, focusing on their forms of installation, permanence, and insertion into the city’s social life. Based on editions of the newspaper Mercantil, it discusses the place of the circus among local forms of entertainment, its relationship with vilegiatura, and the recurrent presence of the imperial family. The text highlights the diversity of circus experiences, as well as the strategies employed by the companies to secure legitimacy with both the public and the press, with particular emphasis on charitable performances. It argues that the circus became integrated into the urban sociabilities of Petrópolis, negotiating morality, utility, and social legitimation.
