Abstract

Resumo: Fruto de seu trabalho de doutorado, o livro de Arlei Damo apresenta rigorosa etnografia para analisar o processo de formação de jogadores de futebol no Brasil e na França. O dom, noção amplamente utilizada no meio futebolístico, figura como eixo central do livro, pois fornece a base para compreender o processo de formação dos jogadores brasileiros no contexto do que o autor chama de futebol espetacularizado. Ao percorrer os caminhos para se tornar um jogador de futebol, Damo discute questões pertinentes para entender a complexidade do fenômeno futebol na sociedade.

REVISITING THE GIFT

Abstract: Fruit of his doctoral thesis, the book of Arlei Damo presents rigorous ethnography to analyze the process of football players' development in Brazil and France. The gift, a widely used notion in the football environment, appears as a central axle of the book, therefore it provides the base to understand the process of development of the Brazilian players in the context of what the author calls of spectacular football. By passing through the ways to become a football player, Damo discusses pertinent questions to understand the complexity of the phenomenon football in the society.
