Abstract
AMUSING PRACTICES IN CAMPINAS AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY (1870-1900)
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to understand the relations of sociability and entertainment in Campinas, in light of the transfigurations of capitalism, in the last three decades of the 19th century (1870-1900). The sources of the research were speeches in the local press and almanacs of the period, codes of conduct, minutes and archives of the City Council and reports from travelers. In this article our focus was on horse racing, since along with carnival festivities and footing, they were the practices most affected by the regulation of the use of space and education of bodies in that period.
