ESCREVENDO A HISTÓRIA DO SALVAMENTO NO MAR NA AUSTRÁLIA

Resumo

Resumo: O debate sobre o salvamento no mar tem sido uma oportunidade para refletir sobre as diferentes formas através das quais a história pode ser escrita e, também, as maneiras pelas quais o historiador pode penetrar na estória. Neste artigo, baseio-me em evidências empíricas para contestar Douglas Booth em duas questões fundamentais: o papel da participação feminina no salvamento no mar e a natureza mais ampla da cultura do salvamento no mar. Continuo convencido de que aquilo, que, para Booth e outros, parece uma organização monolítica, disciplinada, conformista e profundamente conservadora, cujas imagens derivam de Nova Gales do Sul e, em particular, de clubes de Sydney, é muito mais complexa do que eles acreditam.

WRITING AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFESAVING´S HISTORY

Abstract: The surf lifesaving debate has been an opportunity to consider the different forms in which history may be written, and not least the ways in which the historian can intrude on the story. In this article, I draw on empirical evidence to challenge Douglas Booth on two key issues: the role of women´s participation in surf lifesaving and the broader nature of surf lifesaving culture. I remain convinced that what appears to Booth and others to be a monolithic, disciplined, conformist and deeply conservative organization whose image largely derives from New South Wales, and in particular Sydney clubs, is far more complex than they believe.
