Abstract

The communication by smartphones is a phenomenon more and more present in people’s life, facilitating connectivity and exchange of information. As we spend more time online, smartphones take a central place in everyday life. In this context, we find the “dependence” of smartphone and, this article aims to understand the lived experience of people who consider themselves dependent on smartphones. We conducted research based on the critical phenomenological method with 10 participants and used the semi-structured interview as an instrument for the description of their experiences. We found that smartphone dependence is a form of expression of existence intertwined with the world and the culture, and the lens of phenomenology contributes to an understanding of this experience. We recognize in the lived experience of smartphone dependence a way for the subject to be in the world, indicating that there may be others, from opening to new possibilities.
