Abstract

By analyzing some of the canonical paintings of Western art that mobilize the (also canonical) ideal of freedom − such as The death of Marat and Liberty leading the people −, the article seeks to reveal the silences and erasures produced by visual culture. Thus, it suggests that not only do the paintings hide the agents that were essential within emancipatory struggles, but also contribute to the dissemination of an idea of freedom that is fundamentally White and masculine.
