Abstract

We present our British English translation of Catalina la maga, a short story by Cuban author Luis Cabrera Delgado. This project challenged us to engage with a niche area of literary translation: children’s literature translation (CLT), which demands particular sensitivity to style, sense, appropriateness, and sonority. Through this translation exercise, we aim to shed light on this often-underestimated field and to demonstrate that CLT requires the same rigour and meticulous approach as literary translation for an adult audience. We examine some of the critical issues translators must navigate to help ensure that the global literary canon continues to expand and becomes more accessible, diverse, and engaging for young readers.
