Abstract

This essay explores an unlikely kinship between Octavio Paz and Roberto Bolaño, examining their shared conceptualization of poetic creation as a form of motherhood, which is framed here as “immaculate”. Drawing on Paz’s interpretation of Sor Juana, the study investigates the role of female poetic figures in Bolaño’s works – specifically Cesárea Tinajero and Auxilio Lacouture – who offer an ambivalent counterpoint to the dominant aesthetic of compulsory virility within the Mexican avant-garde movement.
Keywords: Roberto Bolaño; Octavio Paz: Avant-Garde; Poetry; Motherhood.
