Cláudio Manuel da Costa’s 1768 volume of poems includes a series of eight cantatas. In the first one, “O pastor divino”, a page break in the first edition disrupted a visual effect created by the poet. The chorus stanza was intended to form the shape of a cross, but this was lost when split across two pages. Subsequent editions have overlooked this detail. This article demonstrates the relevance of this correction and proposes an editorial arrangement of the chorus stanza. It also discusses how the editorial problems in Cláudio Manuel’s book suggest the specifically postcolonial character of his poetics. Printing was forbidden in Brazil until 1808, and Cláudio Manuel’s book was printed in Portugal without the author’s supervision. The paper relates these editorial problems to the exilic persona through which Cláudio Manuel addresses tensions between the colony and the imperial centre.
