The focus of this article is on an adulterous relationship between Luísa and Basílio in O primo Basílio (2017) and the consequences that result from their affair, namely the chaos that it creates in Luísa’s life and her standing within the community, given that her behavior is viewed by bourgeois society as an affront against its norms and conventions. The patriarchal system’s main objective, especially in terms of the conduct of women, is to safeguard its power and privilege, as well as its linguistic/social practices as dominant and legitimate. Luísa’s adultery, grounded in the language of romanticism and its ideals, presents a clear danger to the legitimation of the official discourse. The affair, which does not follow the normalized ethics of honor and behavior, disrupts the existing order and causes her to lose her symbolic capital within the prevailing patriarchal order, a system that always allocates its products differentially to women, a reality that highlights the social asymmetry of gender.
