Impacto social de las modificaciones urbanas en Copacabana, ícono turístico de Río de Janeiro

Abstract

This article analyzes the urban changes that took place in the Copacabana area (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) from the beginning of the 20th century onward, and their impact on social groups composed of impoverished communities, predominantly of African descent, who were displaced from their original residence and relocated to areas located on the surrounding hills, favoring the development of favelas. Almost simultaneously, there were changes in labor relations, the use of the beach area for leisure and recreation, and the expansion of sports, especially soccer, which was conveniently disseminated by the media, especially radio, as a fundamental element of the sought-after national cohesion and integration, due to the overwhelming presence of players from these displaced and, at the same time, invisible sectors.
