Abstract

The Name Does Not Make the Thing: Neoliberal Restructuring of Space and Dispossession of Urban Meanings Neoliberal urban transformations profoundly affect the symbolic dimensions of cities, generating conflicts over the replacement of previous meanings by the introduction of new uses and meanings. This article analyzes the conflicts produced in the construction of post-industrial Barcelona from the urbanization of a tertiary hub in Diagonal Mar, which led to the dispossession of the identity of the traditional cooperative neighborhood. The results indicate that the promoted identity absorbs the preexisting past, generating social resentment among the original inhabitants.
