Navigating Between Fear and Distrust: Urban Mobility and Gender in the Use of Private Transportation Apps in Brazil This article analyzes how women — both drivers and passengers — of private transportation apps develop strategies to cope with urban insecurity in Brazil, a country marked by high rates of gender-based violence. Based on semi-structured interviews, it is observed that while these digital platforms offer new conveniences, they also reinforce stigmas about places and people, as well as fuel mutual distrust between users and drivers. Thus, the technological mediation of these apps creates new forms of sociability, but also reproduces long-standing social dilemmas.
