Abstract

Water samples from a water treatment plant (WTP) located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were collected before and after the treatment in order to determine metals (Al, Cd, Pb and Fe), individual polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo[a]pyrene. Samples of 1L of water were collected once a day for 10 days and assembled, and then defined as composed sample. This procedure was repeated four times along August to September 2002. Drinking water samples showed contents of aluminum (434,0 to 948,0?g L-1), lead (12,0 to 14,0?g L-1) and iron (443,0?g L-1) what are close or sometimes higher than the allowed by the regulations from the Brazilian Health regulations. The PCBs as well as benzo[a]pyrene could not be detected since they were below the detection limits of the method.
