Abstract

EVOLUTIONARY AND ECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF PARENTAL CARE IN BIRDS:
PUBLICATIONS IN TEMPERATE AND TROPICAL ENVIRONMENTS. Reproductive efforts occur disproportionally between males and females, and female is generally the gender with the least reproductive potential and willingness to parental care. Sexual selection favors extremely specialized behaviors of sperm
competition and mate guarding in populations, with direct influences in parental investment on the offspring.
Differences in parental care have influence in secondary sexual characters, affecting species' sexual dimorphism.
In the present work we present the available knowledge on ecology and evolutionary approaches related to
parental care in birds, evidencing the lack of these studies in tropical environments.
Keywords: Sexual selection; extrapair fertilization; stable evolutionary strategy; conflicts between parents and
offpring.
