Resumo

Na Antiguidade, assim como hoje, a água era um recurso altamente valorizado, sendo capaz, inclusive, de determinar a geografia dos assentamentos humanos, dos menores aos mais complexos, como as cidades. Sob o Império Romano, o uso da água pela população citadina se torna mais regular e abundante devido à construção dos aquedutos, estruturas monumentais que abasteciam as fontes públicas, as termas e banhos. À luz dessas considerações, pretendemos, neste artigo, examinar os aspectos práticos e simbólicos que envolviam o uso da água em Antioquia, tendo como estudo de caso o Banho “E”, situado a norte do hipódromo, na ilha formada pelo Orontes, cuja Sala Social Principal era decorada com diversos painéis musivos representando seres mitológicos que habitavam as fontes, rios e mares, em particular nereidas e tritões, o que, supomos, reforçava a simbologia da água como uma relevante matéria-prima para a experiência sensorial desfrutada pelos banhistas em seus momentos de lazer.
