Thematic Dossier LaMuT 30 Years: Relationships Between Musical Creation and Technology

Founded in 1995 by Marisa Resende and Rodolfo Caesar, the Laboratory of Music and Technology (LaMuT) at UFRJ’s School of Music will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. Over these three decades, the laboratory has been a central hub for research and production in electroacoustic music and related fields. However, the relationship between music and technology has shifted significantly during this period. Technologies once restricted to experimental genres of electronic and electroacoustic music are now widely used in audiovisual media and popular music, moving from specialized niches to becoming part of contemporary sonic daily life. Against this backdrop, this call invites reflections on the diverse intersections between musical creation and technology over the past 30 years. The dossier prioritizes (but is not limited to) the following topics:

– Musical technology agendas in Brazil: Past and present

– Analysis and discussion of works linked to LaMuT

– Electroacoustic archaeologies

– Musical creation in the age of artificial intelligence

– Musical creation as a research methodology

– Electroacoustics as a listening sensibility

– University music technology studios and their impact on contemporary music research and sonology

– Intersections between musical creation and sound art

– Brazilian electroacoustic music

– Electroacoustic music and its technologies as tools for social transformation

– Music, technology, and the DIY (“do-it-yourself”) ethos

– Relationships between music and technology in the Global South

Submissions must be original, unpublished full articles (expansions or adaptations of previously published works will not be accepted) in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, adhering to to the guidelines for authors and conditions for submission of the Brazilian Journal of Music. Submissions must be made through the journal’s  OJS platform. The deadline for submissions to this thematic dossier is April 12, 2025.

Call for Testimonials

Additionally, this call includes a section dedicated to the history of LaMuT at UFRJ, aiming to collect testimonials from former students and collaborators on how their experiences at the laboratory influenced their artistic and academic trajectories. Submissions should be original, unpublished texts of 250–500 words in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, submitted to the Brazilian Journal of Music’s “Tribute” section via the OJS platform. The deadline for testimonials is April 12, 2025.
