About the Journal

Founded in 1934, the Brazilian Journal of Music was the first academic-scientific music journal in Brazil. Its mission is to promote the production and dissemination of scientific and artistic knowledge in the field of music, in dialogue with related areas, through the publication of full articles, interviews, reviews, scores and reports. The journal presents original research, reflecting the current state of knowledge in the area, serving a diverse spectrum of readers, from music researchers and musicians to educators, historians, anthropologists, sociologists and cultural scholars.

A publication of the Graduate Program in Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Journal of Music publishes texts in Portuguese, English and Spanish. In a free electronic version, with a biannual periodicity, with national and international circulation, the journal is indexed in the RILM Abstracts of Music Literature and The Music Index-EBSCO databases. In a provisional evaluation of Qualis Periodicals (2018-2019), the Brazilian Journal of Music was classified in stratum B1. From 2020, DOI identifiers will be assigned to all papers accepted for publication.

Thematic Dossier “Sound and Music in Audiovisual Studies

The theme of sound and music in audiovisual studies is gradually establishing itself not only in the large area of communication, in which the field of film studies is placed in Brazil, but also in the field of music research, particularly in the area of sonology. Aiming to foster the development of a recent and challenging (due to its eminently interdisciplinary nature) research field,  the Brazilian Journal of Music invites researchers from Brazil and abroad to submit complete articles for publication in the thematic dossier “Sound and Music in Audiovisual Studies” of its v. 33, no. 1 (2020), directed by guest editors Rodolfo Caesar and Luíza Alvim, respectively leader and researcher of the “Rhythm, Body and Sound” Research Group of the UFRJ Graduate Music Program. Taking into account the experience accumulated in the four editions of the “Interdisciplinary Seminar on Sound and Music in Audiovisual (JISMA)”, a project developed by Luíza Alvim in the context of the referred Research Group between 2016 and 2019, the thematic dossier proposes the following preferred (but not exclusive) topics:

– Theory and aesthetics of sound and music in the audiovisual field

– Historical aspects of sound and music in the audiovisual field

– Technology and use of sound and music in audiovisual media

– Music, sound and education

– Sound and music in fiction cinema

– Sound and music in documentary film

– Musicals in cinema and in the audiovisual field

– Video clip

– Sound and music in television products, video game and video art

– Sound and image; sound art

– Music copyright in the audiovisual field

Contributions, in the form of complete articles in Portuguese, English or Spanish, must be original and unpublished, and conform to the guidelines for authors and conditions for submission of the Brazilian Journal of Music, with submission through the journal’s OJS platform. The deadline for submission of papers for this thematic dossier is 31 March 2020.

Continuous Flow

In addition to the contributions received under its semiannual thematic dossiers, the Brazilian Journal of Music receives and evaluates works submitted for publication in the continuous flow system. According to the journal’s focus and scope, submissions are accepted that contribute to its mission of fostering the production and dissemination of scientific and artistic knowledge in the field of music, in dialogue with related fields, preferably in the fields of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music education and creative processes (composition, music analysis and performance practices).

Contributions, in the form of complete articles in Portuguese, English or Spanish, must be original and unpublished, and conform to the guidelines for authors and conditions for submission of the Brazilian Journal of Music, submitted through the journal’s OJS platform. Submissions in this modality received after March 31, 2020 will be considered for the next volume of publication.
