Music and technology: the first decades of the 20th century

Abstract

The present critical essay proposes to reflect on unfolding caused by the introduction, absorption and assimilation of techniques and scientific and technological instruments in the audition, recording and diffusion of music. Taking as starting point the opening of the Rio de Janeiro International Exhibition, which celebrated the Centennial of Brazil's Independence, framed by the political-economic scenario of the first decades of the 20th century, the text seeks to extend the application of the concept of technology to socio-cultural dimensions and, in particular, artistic-musical, avoiding the reductionist use of this concept, if linked only to scientific issues. This essay concludes with the need for appropriation of the expanded concept of technology, which may be fundamental in those times when information and communication technologies seem to challenge musical practice and production.
