The use of music in the survival-horror game “Pesadelo – Regressão”
Abstract
In this article we analyze the use of music in the survival-horror game Pesadelo – Regressão (Skyjaz Games, 2016) in comparison with Amnesia – The Dark Descent (Frictional Games, 2011) and Outlast (Red Barrels, 2013). The music is analysed in relation to the notion of videogame genres; we discuss how the genre is understood within the videogame’s field and how survival-horror can be understood as a genre. We conclude that the sound design of Pesadelo – Regressão may have a negative impact on player’s experience. Furthermore we discuss how low investment independent production can affect the sound result of a game.
