Carlos Gomes and Villa-Lobos: a parallel in the construction of national identity in Brazilian music

Abstract

This paper presents and discusses the evolution of the search for a national identity through music based on the triad synthesized by Eric Hobsbawm of the national identity ideology. To this end, under such perspective, we analyze the international presence of two Brazilian composers: Antônio Carlos Gomes and Heitor Villa-Lobos, assumed as representatives of Brazilian national music and culture abroad.
