This paper aims to present part of the history of the constitution of Deleuze studies at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in the late 1990s and early 21st century. As well as presenting this part of the story, we want to pay a posthumous tribute to James Arêas, one of the key professors who helped to establish this field of research as we know it today at the university. It is a question of presenting the struggle to study Deleuze at UERJ, as well as the developments that this event gave rise to, and also of reporting on how this aesthetic-political experience influenced our research and ended up constituting a true political act of resistance, worthy of Deleuze’s thought.
