Participatory democracy is the most fruitful ground within contemporary debates about democratic political systems. Inspired by Brazilian forms of participatory democracy which arose after the 1988 Constitution, Mexico City sought to rethink its mode of government by creating Participatory Budgets and Municipal Councils involving Comités Ciudadanos. The aim of this article is apply the concept of political- -geographic engineering in order to analyze the process of implementing participatory democracy in the Mexican capital and to explore differences with the Brazilian model. Based on qualitative research conducted in 2016, we argue that the new political space created lacks legitimacy and reveals the precariousness of democratic practice in Mexico City.
