Jorge Xavier da Silva introduced Geographic Information Systems into Brazil and throughout his long academic career, he had an important role in the professional training of a large number of people. The aim of this article is to pay tribute to this great geographer by focusing on his direct and indirect role in encouraging the use of GIS in the city of Juiz de Fora and at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora as seen through his influence on my academic career.
