This article pays tribute the Postgraduate Programme in Geography of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro at the time of fifty years since its founding. The role of the professors who created the programme is highlighted. These geographers are shown to have exercised considerable influence of the development of Geography in Brazil through successive generations of postgraduate researchers who passed through the Master’s and Doctor’s degrees.
