Abstract

Brazilian cities have been home to prostitution zones since the 19th century, traditionally located in their central regions. This study investigates whether, after the intense urban transformations in Rio de Janeiro, this spatial typology still exists, aiming to identify which of the current prostitution spaces align with its definition. A mapping exercise was conducted to locate these spaces, followed by fieldwork to verify the variables that, according to the literature, characterize them. The results point to the existence of two prostitution zones in the city, neither of which is located in the central area. It is concluded, therefore, that the constant urban reconfigurations led this typology to move to areas where its permanence could coexist with the neighbourhood.
