Abstract

In Metaphysics A, 9 (990b 8-29), Aristotle mentions and criticizes five arguments, which are said to be used by the Platonists for the existence of Ideas. The passage is very brief, though, and does not present a systematic account of these arguments or a complete exposition of his line of refutation. In fact, the whole passage would be unintelligible, if not for the comments of Alexander of Aphrodisias, who offers complement to the text quoting and referring to the content of the ΠΕΡΙ ΙΔΕΩÎ, a lost book in which Aristotle brings forward a formal criticism to the Theory of Ideas. In this paper, we use Alexander's commentary to recompose the five mentioned arguments and the objections Aristotle makes to each of them. Further, we deal with the secondary literature on the issue in order to give a critical overview of Aristotle's text.
