Abstract

Does the Aristotelian definition of time incur a kind-crossing? The present work presents a reading of the Aristotelian definition of time in Physics IV. 11, 219b1-2, explaining its compatibility with the thesis entitled ' kind-crossing prohibition' present in Analytics Posterior I. 7, 75a38-39. The traditional interpretation proposes that the Aristotelian thesis of kind-crossing makes it impossible to use attributes of a scientific domain in other sciences. If this is the case, the Aristotelian definition would incur a transgression, since ‘number’ is an item of arithmetic and could not be used in an object of natural science, such as time. I show a reading of kind-crossing in based on the theory of proportion that makes the definition of time compatible with the thesis of kind-crossing.
