Abstract

ABSTRACT

The following paper seeks to situate cruelty as an intersubjective practice that is embedded in normatively mediated patterns. This implies that practices of cruelty depend on a minimal prescriptive-representationalist relata, challenging Hannah Arendt's observations about the banality of evil in her book Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963): acts of cruelty are not a set of mechanisms devoid of any subjection (insofar they avoid commitments at a normative level), nor are they fueled by irrational impulses. We would like to assert the opposite. Acts of cruelty are normative and based on mediateness.
