Crenças parentais sobre a punição física na criação dos filhos
Abstract
This study aimed to understand the parenting beliefs that support the use of physical punishment by parents who have used it as child-rearing practice. The study included 32 parents of children between two and seven years old. A sociodemographic questionnaire and individual semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed from the Grounded Theory and showed evidence of dysfunctional beliefs about child development, exercise of power over the child, conception that spanking is not violence and physical punishment as necessary for the development and learning of the child. It was concluded that despite scientific evidence on the harm of physical punishment for child development, coercive actions are still strengthened and supported by rooted social beliefs. It is necessary to implement parenting skills improvement programs based on positive parenting strategies.
