Abstract

The career of artists seems to be constructed through speculation: we work towards the future promise of recognition and remuneration, while supposedly accumulating symbolic capital. The value of our work is constructed not only by the material results of our labor, but also through the circulation of ourselves in the scene, as part of the so-called immaterial labor. While we watch the dispute for recognition become the dispute for visibility, the role of such labor expands and transforms itself. Thus, this article proposes to investigate how the labor practices that compose contemporary artistic work are constructed through the experiences of the author as an artist, within a brief framework of contemporary authors.
