Criminal Selectivity and Violent Criminality: The Death Squads and the Dungeons in the State of Espírito Santo

The aim of this article is the study of evidences about violence linked to public security apparatuses in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, with focus on two sides of the problem: a) the participation of policeman in homicides, in clandestinity (vigilante “death squads”) or in the name of “legal duty”; b) the violence inside the prison system, between the prisoners or committed by the security agents against detainees. In the absence of systematizable quantitative data, we choice to prioritize the testimonies and specific cases that illustrate the institutionalization of police and prison militarized violence as a tool of social control.
